    Gwalior Inscription

Gwalior Inscription is a series of inscriptions at the Gwalior Fort complex, Gwalior District, Madhya Pradesh, India.

    Overview

The Gwalior Fort complex contains multiple inscriptions from different periods, most notably the Gurjara-Pratihara prashasti of Mihira Bhoja (876 CE) and inscriptions of later dynasties. These inscriptions document the political and religious history of central India.

    Historical Context

The fort has been occupied since at least the 6th century CE. The Gurjara-Pratihara inscriptions record their control over the region, and the Tomara inscriptions (14th–16th centuries) document the fort’s role as a regional capital. The Teli ka Mandir and Saas-Bahu temples contain architectural inscriptions.

    Features/Significance

The Mihira Bhoja prashasti records the victories of the Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty. The Tomara inscriptions are important for reconstructing the genealogy of the Tomara dynasty. The fort’s inscriptions document the transition from early to medieval temple architecture.

    Modern Status

Gwalior Fort is a protected monument under the ASI and is one of Madhya Pradesh’s most visited heritage sites. The inscriptions remain accessible within the fort complex.
