    Gutika

Gutika is a solid oral dosage form in Ayurveda, similar to tablets or pills, prepared from herbal, mineral, or composite ingredients through specific pharmaceutical processes.

    Overview

Gutika is one of the most versatile dosage forms in Ayurveda, ranging from simple herbal tablets to complex mineral preparations. The term encompasses Vati (compressed tablets), Gutika (pill-sized preparations), and Guggulu-based tablets. Gutikas are convenient, portable, and have a longer shelf life than liquid preparations. They are used across all branches of Ayurvedic medicine for both internal and, in some cases, external applications.

    History and Legend

Gutika preparations are described across all major Ayurvedic texts. The Charaka Samhitaon/charaka) Samhita mentions Vati preparations for various conditions, while the Sushruta Samhitaon/sushruta) Samhita describes Gutika formulations for surgical and wound care applications. The development of Guggulu-based Gutika (like Yogaraj Guggulu, Triphala Guggulu) represents a unique Ayurvedic pharmaceutical innovation where the guggulu resin acts as both an active ingredient and a binding agent. The tradition of preparing Gutika in specific shapes (round, oval, cylindrical) and sizes was associated with specific therapeutic effects.

    Architecture and Features

Gutika preparation involves grinding raw materials to a fine powder, mixing with binding agents (honey, ghee, jaggery, or guggulu), and forming into pills of specific sizes. Modern manufacturing uses tablet presses while maintaining traditional principles of ingredient quality, grinding fineness, and drying methods. Types include simple herbal Gutika (like Triphala Gutika), mineral Gutika (like Kapardika Gutika), and metallic Gutika (like Laxmivilas Ras). Standardization involves weight uniformity, dissolution testing, and active ingredient assay.

    Modern Status

Gutika is the most widely manufactured Ayurvedic dosage form, with major pharmaceutical companies like Dabur, Baidyanath, Zandu, Himalaya, and Patanjali producing hundreds of Gutika formulations. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India provides monographs for over 100 Gutika formulations. Modern GMP-compliant manufacturing facilities produce Gutika at scale while maintaining classical preparation principles. The convenient dosage form has contributed to the commercial success of Ayurvedic medicines.
