History and Legend
The Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple is believed to have been founded during the Dwapara Yuga, with the deity installed by Guru (Brihaspati, the divine teacher) and Vayu (the wind god). The temple’s legend states that after Lord Krishna’s departure from earth, the deity was brought here from the submerged Dwaraka by Guru and Vayu. The temple was historically patronized by the Zamorins of Calicut and later the Cochin Royal Family. The town developed around the temple over centuries, with the 1970s and 80s seeing rapid urbanization.
Architecture and Features
The Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple features traditional Kerala architecture with a copper-roofed sanctum, gold-plated flagstaff, and a large temple tank. The deity is a four-armed Krishna holding the Shankha (conch), Chakra (discus), Gadha (mace), and Padma (lotus). The temple complex includes sub-shrines for Ganapati, Ayyappa, and other deities, as well as the Koothambalam (temple theater). The surrounding town has numerous hotels, restaurants, and shops catering to pilgrims. The Mammiyur Mahadeva Temple nearby is considered the paired temple for completing the Guruvayur pilgrimage.
Modern Status
Guruvayur town has developed significant infrastructure to handle the millions of pilgrims who visit annually. The Guruvayur Devaswom manages the temple and provides accommodation, food, and medical facilities. The annual Utsavam festival (February-March) and Guruvayur Ekadasi are major events.
