History and Legend
According to legend, the deity was brought from the submerged city of Dwaraka by Guru (Brihaspati, the divine teacher) and Vayu (the wind god) after Lord Krishna’s departure from the material world. They installed the deity at this spot, which became known as Guruvayur (combination of Guru and Vayu). The temple has been a center of Vaishnava worship since ancient times and was historically patronized by the Zamorins of Calicut and the Cochin Royal Family. The Mappila Rebellion of 1921 and subsequent restoration added to the temple’s modern history.
Architecture and Features
The temple follows traditional Kerala architecture with a copper-roofed sanctum (Sreekovil), a gold-plated flagstaff (dwajasthambam), and a large temple tank (Chuttambalam). The deity is a four-armed Krishna made of panchaloha (five-metal alloy), holding the Shankha (conch), Chakra (discus), Gadha (mace), and Padma (lotus). The temple complex includes sub-shrines for Ganapati, Ayyappa, and other deities, and the Koothambalam (temple performing arts hall). The Udayasthamana Puja (dawn-to-dusk worship) is the most important daily ritual.
Modern Status
The Guruvayur Devaswom Board manages the temple and its extensive charitable activities, including hospitals, educational institutions, and annadanam (free food distribution) programs.
