Govardhan Math (Puri)
The Govardhan Math (Purushottama? — the Puri matha) is the Purvāmnāya (eastern) Amnaya Matha at Puri, Odisha — one of the four cardinal seats attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, associated with the Jagannath temple’s ritual orbit.
Overview
Tradition holds Shankara established the four mathas (Sringeri south, Dwaraka west, Jyotirmath north, Puri east) with the Govardhan Math at Puri (the samadhi-tradition names Padmapada as its first acharya); the eastern seat’s temple (with its Shankaracharya’s seat near the Jagannath temple) anchors Advaita in Odisha’s Vaishnava capital.
Core teachings
Advaita Vedanta in the Shankara lineage; Rigveda-based learning (the eastern matha’s Veda association); worship of Jagannath (Vishnu) as its form of the Absolute (the matha’s Jagannath-Bhairav? — its tutelary form).
Practice and work
Daily worship and veda-patashala teaching; the Shankaracharya of Puri’s role in sanatana-dharma councils; publications and the matha’s festival participation.
Modern status
Active under its Shankaracharya (the lineage’s late-20th-century restorations are part of its documented history); Puri’s pilgrim city sustains the matha’s role.
