Golden Temple Archives
Golden Temple Archives are the manuscript and document collections of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) complex in Amritsar, Punjab, India.
Overview
The Golden Temple archives contain Sikh religious manuscripts, historical documents, and royal hukamnamas (edicts) dating from the 17th century to the present. They include some of the earliest copies of the Guru Granth Sahib.
Historical Context
The Harmandir Sahib was established by Guru Arjan Dev in 1604 and has been the central shrine of Sikhism since that time. The archives contain manuscripts from the Mughal and Sikh Empire periods, including documents from the court of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (r. 1801-1839). The archives also hold the Guru Granth Sahib manuscripts prepared by the original scribes.
Features/Significance
The archives preserve some of the earliest known manuscripts of the Guru Granth Sahib, including the Kartarpuri Bir (the original manuscript). The hukamnamas document the religious and political authority of the Sikh Gurus and subsequent Sikh leaders. The collection includes documents in Gurmukhi, Persian, and other scripts.
Modern Status
The archives are maintained by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and are accessible to researchers with appropriate permissions. Major manuscripts have been digitized and published.
