Ganesha Atharvashirsha (Recitation of Ganesha’s Upanishad)

Ganesha Atharvashirsha is the devotional practice of reciting the Atharvashirsha Upanishad dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

    Overview

The Ganesha Atharvashirsha is a sacred Hindu text from the Atharva Veda that describes the nature, qualities, and worship of Lord Ganesha. It is one of the most important texts dedicated to Ganesha and is recited for spiritual merit, obstacle removal, and divine protection. The text establishes Ganesha as the supreme Brahman and the source of all creation.

    Method/Content

The text consists of an invocation, nine verses describing Ganesha’s nature and forms, and a concluding phala shruti (benefits section). The recitation is performed sitting in a worship space, ideally on Tuesdays, during Ganesh Chaturthi, or at the beginning of new ventures. The practitioner may recite the complete text (taking approximately 10-15 minutes) or selected verses. Traditional practice includes offering durva grass, modak, and red flowers to Ganesha during or after the recitation.

    Purpose/Benefits

Reciting the Ganesha Atharvashirsha is believed to remove all obstacles, grant wisdom and prosperity, and bestow divine protection. The text describes extraordinary benefits, including freedom from fear, fulfillment of desires, and ultimately liberation. It is considered especially powerful when performed before new beginnings.
