Eight Precepts
Eight Precepts (Pali: Atthasila) are an expanded set of ethical guidelines observed by lay Buddhists on special occasions, adding three more to the five precepts.
Overview
The eight precepts include the five standard precepts plus: abstaining from eating after noon, from entertainment and adornment, and from sleeping on high beds.
Philosophical Context
The eight precepts are observed on Uposatha days and other special occasions. They approximate the monastic Vinaya rules and are designed to support intensive practice.
Interpretations
The additional three precepts (not eating after noon, no entertainment, no high beds) help reduce attachment to sensual pleasures and promote mindfulness.
