Dwaraka Pitha (Sharada Peetham)
The Dwaraka Pitha (the Kalika? — the Dwarka Sharada Matha) is the Paśchimāmnāya (western) Amnaya Matha at Dwarka, Gujarat — the Shankara seat of the west, associated with the Sharada (Saraswati) and Bhadrakali worship and the Sama Veda.
Overview
Tradition holds Shankara established the western matha at Dwarka (Krishna’s ancient capital) with Hastamalaka named in the acharya lists; the Sharada shrine (the goddess of learning, memory of Kashmir’s Sharada Peeth in the west’s naming) and the matha’s Bhadrakali temple are its centers.
Core teachings
Advaita Vedanta in the Shankara lineage; Sama Veda recension learning; the western seat’s role in the dasanami order’s geography.
Practice and work
Daily puja and veda-patashalas; the Shankaracharya of Dwarka’s public dharma role (his councils and statements are part of modern Hindu institutional life); pilgrim services at the Dwarkadhish temple’s orbit.
Modern status
Active under its Shankaracharya (Swami Swarupanand Saraswati’s long tenure from 1982 being its most public era, spanning the Dwarka and Jyotirmath seats’ unification — a documented arrangement); the matha continues as the west’s Advaita anchor.
