Durga Saptashati Pathana (Recitation of Durga’s Seven Hundred Verses)

Durga Saptashati Pathana is the devotional practice of reciting the seven hundred verses in praise of Goddess Durga.

    Overview

Durga Saptashati (also known as Devi Mahatmyam or Chandi) is a Hindu scripture of 700 verses describing the Goddess Durga’s victories over various demons. Found in the Markandeya Purana, this text is recited during Navaratri and other goddess-focused festivals. The recitation narrates the goddess’s battles, triumphs, and divine qualities.

    Method/Content

The text is divided into 13 chapters and is recited in its entirety over nine nights during Navaratri, with specific chapters assigned to each night. The recitation is performed sitting in a worship space before a consecrated image or picture of the Goddess. Traditional practice includes lighting a lamp, offering flowers and incense, and performing aarti at the conclusion. The complete recitation takes approximately 3-4 hours. Some traditions perform the recitation in a single sitting.

    Purpose/Benefits

Reciting Durga Saptashati is believed to invoke the Goddess’s protection, remove negative energies, and bestow courage and strength. The text describes the goddess’s power to overcome all obstacles and enemies, and reciting it is believed to transfer that power to the devotee. It is performed for health, prosperity, protection from evil, and spiritual advancement.
