Divya Prabandham
Divya Prabandham is the collection of 4,000 Tamil verses composed by the twelve Alvar saints, forming the foundational scripture of Sri Vaishnavism.
Overview
The Divya Prabandham, also known as the Nalayira Divya Prabandham (collection of 4,000 verses), is a compilation of devotional hymns composed by the twelve Alvar saints of South India. These hymns are considered equivalent to the Vedas in Sri Vaishnavism and form the basis of the tradition’s liturgical and devotional practices.
Content and Structure
The collection is organized by individual Alvar poets, with each contributor’s hymns grouped together. The verses are composed in Tamil and express intense personal devotion to Vishnu in his various forms, particularly Rama and Krishna. The hymns cover themes of divine love, surrender, the longing for liberation, and the glory of Vishnu’s divine abode. The final section, the Tiruvaymoli of Nammalvar, is particularly revered as the “Tamil Veda.”
Significance
The Divya Prabandham is one of the most important devotional texts in South Indian Vaishnavism. It established Tamil as a sacred language alongside Sanskrit and has been central to the devotional life of Sri Vaishnava communities for over a millennium.
