    Dhyāna Bindu Upaniṣad

The Dhyāna Bindu Upaniṣad is a minor Yoga Upaniṣad that provides detailed instructions on meditation (dhyāna) and the practice of concentrating the mind on the “point” (bindu) of consciousness.

    Overview

The text describes various meditation techniques, including concentration on the syllable Oṃ, the breath, and the internal light. It teaches the practitioner to withdraw the senses and fix the mind on the subtle center within the head, leading to liberation. It is attached to the Atharvaveda.

    Content and Structure

The Dhyāna Bindu Upaniṣad outlines the sixfold yoga (ṣaḍaṅga-yoga) and describes the stages of meditation from initial concentration to the attainment of the seedless samādhi (nirbīja-samādhi). It explains the role of prāṇa (vital breath) and kuṇḍalinī in the meditative process, and provides instructions on posture, diet, and the withdrawal of the senses.

    Significance

The text is important for its detailed practical instructions on meditation, which bridged the philosophical Upaniṣads with the later Haṭha Yoga literature. It influenced the development of meditation techniques in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
