    Devi Mahatmya

The Devi Mahatmya (“Glory of the Goddess”), also called Durga Saptashati (“Seven Hundred Verses”) or Chandi Path, is the foundational scripture of Shakti worship — the first text in which the Goddess is proclaimed supreme.

    Content

Embedded in the Markandeya Purana and framed as a sage’s consolations to a dispossessed king and a merchant betrayed by kin, the text narrates three battles: Durga’s waking Vishnu to slay Madhu and Kaitabha; the Goddess’s defeat of the buffalo-demon Mahishasura; and her destruction of Shumbha and Nishumbha with the emanations Kali, Chanda-Munda’s slayer, and others. Thirteen chapters; 700 verses. The refrains “Ya devi sarvabhuteshu” — she who abides in all beings as consciousness — are the Shakta credo.

    Significance

The Devi Mahatmya is recited complete during Navaratri across India; its thirteen chapters structure Devi temple liturgy from Kamakhya to Vaishno Devi. It elevated the Goddess from consort to supreme reality (Shakti as Brahman), founding the theology on which Shri Vidya and the Mahavidya traditions rest.
