    Dev Samaj (Divine Society)

Dev Samaj is a Hindu reform movement founded in Lahore in 1887 by Shiv Narayan Agnihotri, emphasizing the worship of one God, ethical living, and social reform.

    Overview

Dev Samaj (meaning “Divine Society” or “Society of God”) was founded in 1887 in Lahore (now in Pakistan) by Shiv Narayan Agnihotri, a former member of the Arya Samaj who broke away over philosophical differences. The movement established a theistic philosophy centered on the worship of a single formless God (Dev) and promoted a comprehensive system of ethical and social reform.

    Method/Content

Dev Samaj conducted regular worship services that included prayer, hymn singing, and sermons on ethical and spiritual topics. The movement rejected idolatry, caste discrimination, and ritualism, emphasizing instead the worship of God through good conduct, service, and moral living. It established schools, colleges, and charitable institutions, and advocated for women’s education, widow remarriage, and the abolition of untouchability. The movement’s philosophy combined elements of the Vedas, Upanishads, and modern ethical thought.

    Purpose/Benefits

Dev Samaj sought to create a just and moral society based on the worship of one God and the practice of ethical living. It promoted education, social reform, and the application of spiritual principles to daily life. The movement established a network of educational institutions that continue to operate today, contributing to the intellectual and moral development of its communities.
