    Davalgiri Shakti Peetha

Davagiri (also spelled Davalgiri), associated with the Bimala Temple in Puri, is the Shakti Peetha where Sati’s feet are said to have fallen. The Bimala Temple stands within the sacred complex of the Jagannath temple at Puri, making it one of the few Shakti Peethas located within a major Vaishnavite pilgrimage centre.

    Background

The Bimala Temple is one of the most important Shakta shrines in Odisha. It is traditionally regarded as the western-quarter (pashchima dig) goddess of the Puri temple complex, complementing Jagannath at the centre. The temple’s antiquity is considerable, though the present structure has been rebuilt over the centuries under various Odishan dynasties.

    Shakti Peetha significance

According to the Shakti Peetha tradition, the feet of Sati fell at this location. The identification of Bimala as a Shakti Peetha links the Jagannath temple complex to the broader network of Shakta sacred geography. The temple is also significant in the context of Odishan tantric traditions, which integrate Shakta and Vaishnavite practice.

    Associated deity

The presiding deity is Bimala (also known as Vijaya), a form of the Divine Mother. She is worshipped as the consort of Jagannath in some theological frameworks, and offerings from the Jagannath temple are traditionally brought to Bimala before being distributed as prasad.

    Present day

The Bimala Temple remains an active place of worship within the Jagannath temple complex at Puri. It is managed as part of the larger Jagannath temple administration and receives devotees throughout the year, with increased attendance during major festivals such as Rath Yatra and Navaratri.
