Darśana Upaniṣad
The Darśana Upaniṣad is one of the minor Upaniṣads of Hinduism. It is one of the twenty Yoga Upaniṣads in the Muktikā canon of 108 Upaniṣads, and it is attached to the Sāmaveda.
Overview
The text presents classical Yoga in a format similar to Patañjali’s Yogasūtras, arranged in a sequential ascending series of eight yogic stages. Unlike the Yogasūtras, however, the Darśana Upaniṣad also includes kuṇḍalinī concepts.
Content
The text describes the practice of Yoga through its ascending stages, covering ethical discipline, posture, breath control, and meditation culminating in samādhi. The ultimate goal of Yoga, states the Upaniṣad, is self-knowledge and realizing the identity of one’s Self (ātman) with the Universal Reality (Brahman).
Significance
The Darśana Upaniṣad is significant as a systematic manual of classical Yoga within the Upaniṣadic corpus, bridging the Pātañjala tradition and the kuṇḍalinī-oriented haṭha yoga tradition.
Verification notes
Text verified against standard editions. The Darśana Upaniṣad is included in the Muktikā canon of 108 Upaniṣads as one of the twenty Yoga Upaniṣads and is attached to the Sāmaveda.
