Chidambaram
Chidambaram (சிதம்பரம்) is a sacred town in Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu.
Overview
Chidambaram is home to the Nataraja Temple, one of the most important Shiva temples in South India, where Shiva is worshipped as Nataraja (the cosmic dancer). It is one of the Pancha Sabhas (five dance halls) of Nataraja and a major centre of Shaivite worship.
History and Legend
The temple is associated with the legendary cosmic dance of Shiva (Ananda Tandava) performed here. The Chola, Pallava, and Vijayanagara dynasties patronised the temple. The temple’s Chidambar Rahasya (secret of Chidambaram) is a closely guarded spiritual mystery.
Architecture and Features
The temple is unique in its architecture, with a gold-plated roof over the sanctum and the famous Nataraja bronze. The Chitsabha (hall of consciousness) is the inner sanctum. The temple’s five halls represent the five elements, and the Ananda Tandava pose of Nataraja is unique to Chidambaram.
Modern Status
The temple is managed by the Dikshitars, a community of hereditary priests. Chidambaram is a major pilgrimage centre and cultural centre for Tamil Nadu.
