    Chandra Namaskar

Chandra Namaskar is a sequence of yoga postures performed as a salutation to the moon.

    Overview

Chandra Namaskar, meaning “moon salutation,” is a flowing sequence of asanas performed in honor of the lunar energy. It is a complement to Surya Namaskar (sun salutation) and embodies the cooling, receptive, and feminine qualities of the moon.

    Method/Content

The sequence typically begins in Pranamasana (prayer pose) and moves through postures including Hasta Uttanasana, Uttanasana, Ashwa Sanchalanasana, and others, mirroring the structure of Surya Namaskar but with lunar-oriented variations. The sequence is performed on the left side first to honor the ida nadi (lunar channel). The breath is coordinated with each movement, inhaling on expansions and exhaling on contractions. Traditionally 14 postures are performed in the sequence.

    Purpose/Benefits

Chandra Namaskar calms the nervous system and cools the body. It balances feminine and masculine energies and is especially beneficial during the lunar phase or in warm weather. The practice promotes introspection, emotional balance, and receptivity.

    Verification Notes
