Brahmavihara (Divine Abodes) refers to the four immeasurable mental states: loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.
Overview
Brahmaviharas are cultivated through meditation and are considered the highest form of mental purification. They are called “divine abodes” because they lead to rebirth in the Brahma realms.
Philosophical Context
In Buddhist philosophy, the Brahmaviharas counter the negative states of hatred, cruelty, envy, and attachment. They are cultivated through specific meditation practices.
