Bound Lotus (Baddha Padmasana)
Baddha Padmasana is a seated posture in Hatha Yoga involving a bound lotus position.
Overview
Bound Lotus, meaning “bound lotus pose,” is an advanced seated posture where the practitioner sits in Padmasana (lotus pose) and crosses the arms to hold the opposite feet, binding the body into a compact position.
Method/Content
The practitioner first establishes Padmasana with both feet placed on the opposite thighs. The arms then cross in front of the body, with each hand reaching to grasp the opposite foot. The bind creates a compact, bound position. The spine remains straight and the gaze is inward or slightly downward.
Purpose/Benefits
Bound Lotus opens the shoulders, chest, and hips while developing flexibility in the arms and wrists. It creates a sense of containment and inward focus. The pose is used in meditation and pranayama practice.pranayama) practice.
