    Bhuta Shuddhi (Elemental Purification)

Bhuta Shuddhi is a Tantric purification practice of cleansing and balancing the five great elements (pancha mahabhuta) within the body.

    Overview

Bhuta Shuddhi, meaning “purification of the elements,” is a systematic practice from the Netra Tantra and other Tantric texts that addresses the five elemental constituents of the physical body: earth (prithvi), water (apas), fire (tejas), air (vayu), and ether (akasha). When these elements are in balance, health and spiritual clarity are maintained; when imbalanced, disease and spiritual obstruction arise.

    Method/Content

The practice involves a combination of visualization, mantra, pranayama, and specific gestures. The practitioner visualizes each element in its corresponding body region—earth in the lower abdomen, water in the pelvic region, fire in the navel, air in the heart, and ether in the throat. Each element is purified through its corresponding bija mantra: LAM (earth), VAM (water), RAM (fire), YAM (air), HAM (ether). The practitioner breathes into each region while mentally chanting the bija, visualizing the element becoming purified and luminous.

    Purpose/Benefits

Bhuta Shuddhi purifies the elemental composition of the body, restoring balance and health. It is considered a foundational practice in Tantra, preparing the practitioner for higher energy practices. The practice is believed to remove elemental imbalances that cause disease, enhance vitality, and create the clarity necessary for meditation and spiritual advancement.
