    Bhaishajya Kalpa

Bhaishajya Kalpa is the pharmaceutical branch of Ayurveda dealing with the preparation, processing, and standardization of Ayurvedic medicines and formulations.

    Overview

Bhaishajya Kalpa (Ayurvedic pharmaceutics) is the science of transforming raw medicinal substances into therapeutic preparations using classical processing methods. It encompasses over 60 types of dosage forms including churna (powders), vati/gutika (tablets), asava/arishta (fermented liquids), ghrita (medicated ghee), taila (medicated oils), lepa (pastes), and bhasma (calcinated preparations). The science ensures the potency, safety, and efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines through standardized processing techniques.

    History and Legend

The Bhaishajya Kalpa is described in detail in the Charaka Samhitaon/charaka) Samhita (Sutra Sthana 26), Sushruta Samhitaon/sushruta) Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya. The ancient Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia recognized that raw materials needed specific processing to become therapeutically active. The science of Bhasma preparation (calcination of metals and minerals) represents one of the most sophisticated pharmaceutical processes in ancient medicine. The Sushruta Samhita describes over 500 formulations, and the Ashtanga Hridaya catalogs over 800 classical preparations.

    Architecture and Features

Key dosage forms include Churna (fine powders of herbs), Vati/Gutika (compressed tablets), Asava (fresh herb fermentation), Arishta (decoction fermentation), Ghrita (medicated ghee), Taila (medicated oil), Lepa (external pastes), Bhasma (incinerated metals/minerals), Rasa (mercury preparations), and Kupipakwa (glass bottle preparations). Each dosage form has specific processing rules regarding ingredient quality, grinding methods, cooking times, and storage conditions. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API) now provides modern standards for these traditional preparations.

    Modern Status

Bhaishajya Kalpa is taught at all BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) colleges in India and is practiced by Ayurvedic pharmacists and physicians. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, published by the Government of India, provides standardized monographs for over 350 formulations. Manufacturing follows Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as mandated by the Ministry of AYUSH, and major pharmaceutical companies like Dabur, Baidyanath, Arya Vaidya Pharmacy, and Himalaya produce classical formulations at scale.

    Verification Notes
