    Overview

Belur Math on the western bank of the Hooghly River near Kolkata is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Missionon/ramakrishna) Mission and Ramakrishna Math, founded by Swami Vivekananda. It is one of the most important modern Hindu pilgrimage centres and a symbol of the harmony of religions.

    History and Legend

Belur Math was established by Swami Vivekananda in 1897 as the headquarters of the Ramakrishna order. The site was chosen by Vivekananda himself, who wanted to build a monastery that would be a bridge between Eastern and Western thought. The main temple was consecrated in 1938.

    Architecture and Features

The main temple is designed to resemble a church from a distance, a mosque from another angle, and a Hindu temple from yet another — symbolizing the harmony of all religions. The temple houses a marble statue of Sri Ramakrishna. The complex includes the shrines of Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda, a library, and a museum.

    Modern Status
