    Belur and Halebidu

Belur and Halebidu (बेलूर और हलेबीदु) are temple complexes in Hassan district, Karnataka.

    Overview

Belur and Halebidu are two temple towns in the Hassan district of Karnataka, famous for their exquisite Hoysala-era temples. The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur and the Hoysaleshwara Temple at Halebidu are among the finest examples of Hoysala architecture and are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

    History and Legend

Belur was the early capital of the Hoysala dynasty, and the Chennakeshava Temple was built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to commemorate his victory over the Cholas. Halebidu (Dwarasamudra) was the later capital, and the Hoysaleshwara Temple was built by Ketamalla, a minister of King Vishnuvardhana. Both temples are dedicated to Vishnu and Shiva respectively.

    Architecture and Features

The Chennakeshava Temple at Belur features intricate lathe-turned pillars, exquisite bracket figures (madanikas), and detailed friezes depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Hoysaleshwara Temple at Halebidu is known for its wall panels depicting gods, animals, and daily life. The star-shaped platform (jagati) and ornate carvings are hallmarks of Hoysala art.

    Modern Status

Both sites are UNESCO World Heritage Sites (inscribed 2023 as part of Sacred Ensembles of Hoysala) and major tourist destinations. They are maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Karnataka government.
