    Beas River

Beas River (ब्यास नदी) is a sacred river in northern India.

    Overview

The Beas is one of the five rivers of Punjab, flowing 470 km from the Beas Kund near Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh through the Kullu Valley and Punjab to join the Sutlej. It is the ancient Vipasa, one of the rivers crossed by Alexander the Great.

    History and Legend

The Beas is mentioned in the Rigveda as “Vipasa” (the liberated one). The river flows through the beautiful Kullu Valley, which is known as the “Valley of the Gods.” The ancient town of Kullu on its banks is an important pilgrimage centre. Alexander the Great crossed the Beas in 326 BCE.

    Architecture and Features

Major sites along the Beas include Rohtang Pass (source), Manali, Kullu, and the confluence with the Sutlej at Harike. The river is known for its white-water rapids and scenic beauty in the upper reaches. The Pong Dam on the Beas is a major wildlife sanctuary.

    Modern Status

The Beas is a major source of irrigation and drinking water for Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The Pong Dam reservoir is an important wetland for migratory birds. The river is popular for white-water rafting.
