Overview
Basavakalyan (formerly Kalyana) is a town in the Bidar district of Karnataka, with a history spanning over 5,000 years. It is most famous as the birthplace and active center of Basaveshwara (1134-1196 CE), the philosopher who founded the Lingayat (Veerashaiva) movement and established the Anubhava Mantapa, considered the first parliament in the world. The town was the capital of the Kalyani Chalukyas and has numerous historical and religious monuments.
History and Legend
Basavakalyan was the capital of the Western Chalukya dynasty from the 10th to 12th centuries. Basaveshwara was born here in 1134 CE and served as the prime minister under King Bijjala. He established the Anubhava Mantapa as a center for social and spiritual discourse, where people of all castes gathered as equals. He championed the cause of untouchability removal, gender equality, and social justice through his Vachana (prose poetry) movement. After conflicts with conservative forces, Basaveshwara left Kalyana, and the city later came under the Bahmani Sultanate.
Architecture and Features
Major historical sites include the Anubhava Mantapa (reconstructed), the Basaveshwara statue (one of the tallest in India at 81 feet), the Kudalasangama (confluence of rivers where Basaveshwara attained Samadhi), and numerous Chalukyan-era temples and inscriptions. The Basaveshwara temple at Kudalasangama houses his pitha (seat). The town also has the ruins of the Chalukyan capital, including fortifications, palaces, and temples. The Naganath Temple and the Jal Dwar (water gate) are notable architectural remnants.
