    Bandha (Tantric)

Bandha (lock, restraint) is a yogic technique for directing the flow of prana (vital energy) through the subtle body.

    Overview

Bandha (Sanskrit bandha, “lock” or “bond”) refers to three main energy locks used in Hatha Yoga and Kundalini Yoga to direct the flow of prana (vital energy) through the nadi (energy channels). The three bandhas are: mula bandha (root lock), uddiyana bandha (abdominal lock), and jalandhara bandha (throat lock). When all three are engaged simultaneously, it is called maha bandha (great lock).

    Philosophical Context

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century) describes the three bandhas as essential practices for awakening kundalini energy. Mula bandha contracts the pelvic floor, directing energy upward into the sushumna (central channel). Uddiyana bandha draws the abdomen inward and upward, creating a vacuum that stimulates the prana to rise. Jalandhara bandha compresses the throat, preventing prana from escaping through the upper chakras. Together, the three bandhas create a “container” for the rising energy, preventing it from dispersing.

    Interpretations

In kundalini yoga, the bandhas are used to direct kundalini energy through the chakras to the crown. In raja yoga, the bandhas are used to still the mind and prepare for meditation. In tantra yoga, the bandhas are part of mudra (seal) practices that seal energy within the body. The Shiva Samhita states: “When the three bandhas are practiced, the mind becomes still and the inner light shines.”
