Bahya Kumbhaka
Bahya Kumbhaka is the external breath retention practiced during pranayama in Hatha Yoga.
Overview
Bahya Kumbhaka is the retention of breath after a complete exhalation and before the next inhalation. It is considered more advanced than abhyantara kumbhaka and requires greater mastery of breath control.
Method/Content
After completing rechaka (full exhalation), the practitioner holds the lungs empty and retains the breath externally. The abdominal muscles may be drawn inward gently (uddiyana bandhaa](/entry/bandha-classical)) to maintain the empty state. The retention is held for a comfortable duration, typically shorter than the inhalation count for beginners. The practitioner remains relaxed and avoids straining.
Purpose/Benefits
Bahya Kumbhaka is believed to purify the nadi system more deeply than internal retention. It creates a vacuum effect that draws prana into the subtle body. The practice also strengthens the abdominal muscles and diaphragm, and is said to stimulate the manipura chakra.
