    Attukal

Attukal is a neighborhood in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, famous for the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple and the annual Attukal Pongala festival, which holds the Guinness World Record for the largest annual gathering of women.

    Overview

Attukal is a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) in Kerala, located about 2 km from the city center. It is renowned for the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple dedicated to the goddess Kannaki (Attukal Amma), an incarnation of Parvati. The temple is famous for the annual Attukal Pongala festival, where millions of women prepare a sacred offering (pongal) in earthen pots, creating the world’s largest congregation of women for a religious event.

    History and Legend

The Attukal Bhagavathy Temple legend connects to the Sangam literature epic Silappadikaram, which narrates the story of Kannaki, a woman whose husband was wrongly executed. In her rage, she burned the city of Madurai with her left earring. According to tradition, Kannaki appeared in the dreams of a Namboodiri Brahmin in the 12th century and directed him to install her idol at Attukal. The temple was consecrated in the traditional Kerala style, and the Pongala festival commemorates Kannaki’s divine grace. The temple trust manages extensive charitable activities.

    Architecture and Features

The temple follows traditional Kerala architecture with copper-roofed sanctums, wooden carvings, and a gold-plated flagstaff (dwajasthambam). The temple complex includes the main shrine of Attukal Amma, sub-shrines for Shiva, Ganapati, and Ayyappa, and a large courtyard. The annual Pongala festival transforms the surrounding streets into a massive open-air kitchen where over three million women cook the sacred pongal offering. The ten-day festival features traditional music, dance, and ritual performances.

    Modern Status

Attukal Pongala is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest annual gathering of women, with over three million participants. The festival typically falls in February-March (Malayalam month of Kumbha). The temple is managed by the Attukal Devaswom Board and receives millions of devotees annually. The surrounding area has developed into a bustling commercial and residential neighborhood while maintaining its spiritual significance.
