    Asana Practice

Asana Practice is the physical discipline of yoga postures in the eightfold path.

    Overview

Asana, meaning “seat” or “posture,” refers to the physical practice of yoga postures. In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, asana is defined as a steady and comfortable seat, but in modern yoga it encompasses a wide range of physical postures designed to prepare the body for meditation.

    Method/Content

Asana practice involves moving through a series of physical postures that develop strength, flexibility, balance, and body awareness. The practice typically begins with warming movements, progresses through standing, seated, and inverted postures, and concludes with relaxation. Each posture is held with steady breath and mindful awareness. The practice may be gentle and restorative or vigorous and challenging depending on the style.

    Purpose/Benefits

Asana practice prepares the body for long periods of seated meditation by developing strength, flexibility, and comfort. It improves overall health, reduces physical tension, and increases body awareness. The practice is said to purify the body, balance the doshas, and harmonize prana flow.

    Verification Notes

    • The third limb of Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yoga (Yoga Sutras 2.46-2.48)
    • Patanjali defines asana as “steady and comfortable posture”
    • Modern asana practice has expanded significantly beyond the classical seated postures
