    Ardha Matsyendrasana

Ardha Matsyendrasana is a seated spinal twist yoga posture, also known as the half lord of the fishes pose.

    Overview

Ardha Matsyendrasana, meaning “half lord of the fishes posture,” is a seated spinal twist that is named after the sage Matsyendranath. It is one of the most important twisting asanas in Hatha Yoga.

    Method/Content

The practitioner sits with the left leg extended, bends the right knee and places the right foot outside the left knee. The left arm wraps around the right knee while the right hand is placed on the floor behind the back. The spine is lengthened and the torso twists to the right. The posture is held for 30 seconds to 1 minute on each side.

    Purpose/Benefits

Ardha Matsyendrasana improves spinal flexibility and promotes healthy rotation of the vertebrae. It stimulates the digestive organs, improves metabolism, and helps relieve constipation. The twist also massages the liver and kidneys and is said to awaken kundalini energy.
