Ardha Chandrasana
Ardha Chandrasana is a standing balancing yoga posture, also known as the half moon pose.
Overview
Ardha Chandrasana, meaning “half moon posture,” is a standing balance where the body forms a half-moon shape with one hand on the floor and the other reaching toward the ceiling. It combines balance, lateral extension, and a gentle backbend.
Method/Content
From Trikonasana, the practitioner bends the front knee, reaches the hand to the floor or a block in front of the front foot, and lifts the back leg parallel to the floor. The top arm extends vertically toward the ceiling, and the chest opens to the side. The gaze may follow the raised hand. The posture is held for 15 to 30 seconds on each side.
Purpose/Benefits
Ardha Chandrasana improves balance, coordination, and concentration while strengthening the legs and core. It stretches the hips, groins, and spine while opening the chest. The posture is said to improve digestion and reduce stress.
Verification Notes
- A foundational balancing pose in most yoga traditions
- A block under the lower hand makes the posture more accessible
- Requires practice to develop the balance and strength needed
