Apana Mudra
Apana Mudra is a hand gesture (mudra) that directs downward-flowing energy in the body.
Overview
Apana Mudra, meaning “downward energy seal,” is formed by joining the tips of the middle finger and ring finger with the tip of the thumb. It activates apana vayu, the downward-flowing prana responsible for elimination and grounding.
Method/Content
The middle finger and ring finger are folded to touch the tip of the thumb. The index finger and little finger remain extended. The hands rest on the thighs or knees with palms upward. The mudra is held for 15 to 30 minutes during meditation or can be practiced at any time. It is particularly effective when practiced in the early morning.
Purpose/Benefits
Apana Mudra is said to regulate the elimination processes of the body, including urination, defecation, and menstruation. It helps relieve constipation and supports detoxification. The practice also grounds restless energy and promotes a sense of stability and calm.
