    Anupalabdhi

Anupalabdhi (अनुपलब्धि) is the pramāṇa of non-cognition or knowledge of absence — the awareness that something does not exist where it is expected to be found. When one looks for an object and fails to find it, the resulting awareness of its absence is not merely the failure of perception but a positive cognitive act. This pramāṇa is particularly important in the Advaita Vedānta tradition for establishing the illusory nature of empirical reality and the non-duality of Brahman.

The classic defense of anupalabdhi as a distinct pramāṇa comes from Kumārila Bhaṭṭa’s Mīmāṃsā (the Bhāṭṭa school) and from Advaita Vedānta. When we perceive an absence — say, the absence of a pot on the ground — the Bhāṭṭa view holds that we are not merely failing to perceive the pot; we are actively apprehending the absence itself, prompted by the expectation of finding the object in a specific locus. Without this expectation, absence would never be cognized.

The Nyāya and Prābhākara traditions reject anupalabdhi as an independent pramāṇa, treating knowledge of absence as a product of inference or of perception of the bare locus. Rāmānuja’s Śrībhāṣya levels broader critiques against the Advaita framework on which this pramāṇa serves. The debate has significant metaphysical implications: if anupalabdhi is a valid pramāṇa, it supports the Advaita use of negation in characterizing the world of multiplicity as anirvacanīya — indescribable as either real or unreal.

    Verification notes

    • The Wikipedia Pramana article (ref extract) lists anupalabdhi (“non-perception, proof from absence”) among the six pramāṇas, accepted by the Bhāṭṭa Mīmāṃsā and Advaita Vedānta schools.
    • Vācaspati Miśra’s Bhāmatī is his sub-commentary on Śaṅkara’s Brahmasūtra commentary; his Tattvakaumudī is a commentary on the Sāṃkhyakārikā, not a Vedānta text.
    • The attribution of a defense of anupalabdhi to Udayana (a Nyāya thinker whose school rejects it as an independent pramāṇa) was removed as unsupported.
    • Audited against Wikipedia (September 2026).
