Ambaji Temple
Ambaji Temple (अम्बाजी मंदिर) is a Shakti Peetha in Ambaji, Gujarat.
Overview
The Ambaji Temple in the Aravalli Hills of Gujarat enshrines the goddess Amba (Arasuri Ambaji) and is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. The temple is unique in having no idol in the sanctum — only a sacred Shree Yantra is worshipped.
History and Legend
According to tradition, the heart (hridaya) of Sati fell at this site, making it one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas. The temple’s antiquity is established by references in the Revera copper plate inscription (6th century CE). The goddess is worshipped as the mother of the universe.
Architecture and Features
The temple is built in the Nagara style with a square sanctum. The Shree Yantra, a geometric diagram of the goddess, is the central object of worship — there is no anthropomorphic idol. The temple is reached by a long flight of steps and offers panoramic views of the Aravalli Hills.
Modern Status
The temple is managed by the Shri Arasuri Ambaji Mata Trust and receives millions of pilgrims annually, especially during the Bhadarvi Purnima fair. The surrounding Banaskantha district is semi-arid.
