    Ahobilam

Ahobilam is a sacred town in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal district, renowned for its nine Narasimha temples and as the site where Lord Narasimha manifested to slay the demon Hiranyakashipu.

    Overview

Ahobilam is a pilgrim town located in the Nallamala Hills of Andhra Pradesh, approximately 70 km from Nandyal. It is famous for its nine (Nava) Narasimha temples scattered across the Nallamala Hills, each marking a different episode in the legend of Lord Narasimha’s manifestation. The town is one of the most important Vaishnava pilgrimage sites in South India and attracts devotees seeking the fierce protective grace of Narasimha.

    History and Legend

According to the Bhagavata Purana, Lord Vishnu manifested as Narasimha (half-man, half-lion) to kill the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who had a boon that he could not be killed by man or animal, indoors or outdoors, during day or night. Narasimha appeared from a pillar at Hiranyakashipu’s palace, fulfilling all conditions of the boon while protecting his devotee Prahlada. The nine Narasimha temples at Ahobilam represent different episodes: Ugra Narasimha (fierce form), Malola Narasimha (gracious form), Kroda Narasimha (boar form), and others. The Ahobilam legend is narrated in the Brahmanda Purana and Ahobila Mahatmya.

    Architecture and Features

The nine temples include: Ahobila Niyamam (main temple), Malola Narasimha Temple, Kroda Narasimha Temple, Jwala Narasimha Temple, Yogananda Narasimha Temple, Karanja Narasimha Temple, Bhargava Narasimha Temple, Shri Narasimha Temple (Varaha form), and Chatravata Narasimha Temple. Each temple has distinct architectural features and is located in different settings across the hills. The main temple houses a self-manifested (swayambhu) image of Narasimha. The Nallamala Hills provide a dramatic forested backdrop.

    Modern Status

Ahobilam receives lakhs of devotees annually, particularly during Narasimha Jayanti (in the month of Vaishakha). The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) manages the temple complex and provides pilgrim facilities. A ropeway has been installed to facilitate access to hilltop temples. The surrounding Nallamala Hills are part of the Nagarjuna Sagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, adding wildlife viewing opportunities to the pilgrimage.
