Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand)
Adho Mukha Vrksasana is a full arm balance inversion in Hatha Yoga.
Overview
Adho Mukha Vrksasana, meaning “downward-facing tree pose,” is a freestanding handstand where the body balances entirely on the hands with legs extended vertically. It represents a significant milestone in arm balance and inversion practice.
Method/Content
From Downward Dog, one leg lifts and the practitioner kicks up or presses up into a handstand. The arms remain straight with shoulders stacked over the wrists. The core engages to maintain a straight vertical line from hands to feet. The gaze is directed between the hands, and the breath remains controlled. Wall support is commonly used during the learning phase.
Purpose/Benefits
Handstand builds upper body and core strength while developing balance and spatial awareness. It improves circulation and lymphatic flow through the inversion. The pose cultivates confidence and focus.
