    Mount Abu

Mount Abu (माउंट आबू) is a sacred hill station and pilgrimage site in Rajasthan.

    Overview

Mount Abu is the highest peak in the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan, rising 1,722 metres above sea level. It is a major Hindu and Jain pilgrimage centre, home to the famous Dilwara Jain Temples and the ancient Achalgarh Fort.

    History and Legend

Mount Abu is considered sacred in Jainism as the place where the first Tirthankara, Rishabhadeva, attained nirvana. The Dilwara Temples, built between the 11th and 13th centuries, are among the finest examples of Jain temple architecture. According to Hindu mythology, Mount Abu is the home of the sage Vashishtha.

    Architecture and Features

The main attractions are the Dilwara Jain Temples, particularly the Vimal Vasahi and Luna Vasahi temples, which feature extraordinarily intricate marble carvings. The Achalgarh Fort houses the Achaleshwar Mahadeva Temple. The Nakki Lake in the town centre is considered sacred.

    Modern Status

Mount Abu is Rajasthan’s only hill station and a major tourist destination. It is also an important centre for Jain pilgrimage, especially during the Mahavir Jayanti celebrations. The town is a popular retreat from the Rajasthan heat.
