Abhyantara Kumbhaka
Abhyantara Kumbhaka is the internal breath retention practiced during pranayama in Hatha Yoga.
Overview
Abhyantara Kumbhaka, also known as antara kumbhaka, is the retention of breath after a full inhalation and before exhalation begins. It is the most commonly practiced form of kumbhaka and serves as the foundation for advanced breath retention techniques.
Method/Content
After completing puraka (inhalation), the practitioner closes both nostrils and retains the breath internally. The glottis may be gently engaged to prevent air from escaping. The duration of retention is held for a comfortable count, typically starting at the same duration as inhalation and gradually increasing. The practitioner maintains awareness of the body and mind during the pause, avoiding any strain or discomfort.
Purpose/Benefits
Abhyantara Kumbhaka increases oxygen absorption and is believed to distribute prana throughout the nadi system. It builds concentration and mental steadiness. Regular practice strengthens the respiratory system and prepares the practitioner for more advanced forms of kumbhaka.
