51 Shakti Peetha Yatra
51 Shakti Peetha Yatrakti) Peetha Yatra is the pilgrimage to the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas (seats of the Goddess) spread across the Indian subcontinent. It is considered one of the most important Shakta pilgrimages and is believed to grant the blessings of the Divine Mother.
Overview
The 51 Shakti Peethas are sacred sites where parts of the body of Sati (the first wife of Lord Shiva) fell when her body was dismembered by Vishnu’s Sudarshana Chakra. The sites are described in the Mahabhagavata Purana, the Devi Bhagavata Purana, and the Shiva Purana. Each Shakti Peetha is associated with a specific form of the Goddess (Shakti) and a corresponding form of Lord Shiva (Bhairava). The 51 sites are spread across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet, and Sri Lanka.
Method
The devotee visits each of the 51 Shakti Peetha sites in the prescribed order, performing rituals at each location. The rituals include offering prayers, performing puja, offering flowers and sindoor (vermilion) to the Goddess, and making donations. The journey may be undertaken over several years or in a single trip, depending on the devotee’s circumstances. The practice is typically accompanied by fasting, chanting of Goddess mantras, and other spiritual disciplines.
